Utah coronavirus cases and hospitalizations remain low, with 2 child deaths reported

The most recent state health data shared Friday, April 14, shows decreasing COVID-19 case counts while hospitalizations increased slightly, yet still remain low.

Utah on Friday also reported eight COVID-19 deaths in the last week. Two of those who died were children.

Current sewage data shows elevated amounts of coronavirus in one of the 34 sites across the state as of April 14, according to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.

Out of the state’s 34 sites, 12 reported enough of the virus that they are on “watch” status, meaning there’s a possibility that those sites could see elevated levels soon.

Overall, wastewater trend analyses indicate the amount of COVID-19 has plateaued at 25 sites. Seven sites reported decreasing trends of the virus, while two sites — near Tooele and Roosevelt — reported increasing trends.

Breakdown of updated COVID-19 metrics in Utah, as of April 14:

Vaccine doses administered in the past week/total doses administered • 3,033 / 5,928,113.

Number of Utahns fully vaccinated • 2,081,762 people — or about 64.1% of Utah’s total population — have received both doses of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine series, or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Another 491,052 Utahns have received a bivalent booster dose after completing a primary vaccine series — or 15.1% of the population.

Cases reported in the past week • 834.

Average cases per day reported in the past week • 138.

Deaths reported in the past week • Eight.

Salt Lake County reported the most deaths with five, including a boy age 1-14, a woman age 65-84 and a woman and two men ages 85 or older. Officials retracted the death of a man age 18-24 that was reported last week.

Utah County also reported the death of a boy age 1-14.

In Davis County, officials reported one death — a man age 65-84. Emery County reported the death of a man age 85 or older.

Hospitalizations reported this week • As of Thursday, 65 Utahns were hospitalized with COVID-19 — 13 more than the previous week. There were 11 patients in intensive care Thursday, two more than reported last Thursday.

The seven-day average for people hospitalized with COVID-19 increased from 58 to 59. The seven-day average for new hospital admissions increased about 5% to 12.

Percentage of positive tests • As of March 14, when the state changed its “communicable disease rule,” DHHS stopped reporting this information.

“This changed the reportability of COVID-19 testing, specifically removing negative reporting for a large portion of tests. Due to this change, percent positivity will no longer be updated,” according to the state’s COVID-19 dashboard.

Totals to date • 1,095,398 cases; 5,341 deaths; 42,753 hospitalizations.
