Sugar House Park open to vehicles again; Emigration Creek expected to flood next

The road in Sugar House Park is open to vehicles again, according to an announcement from Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, after being closed around 7:30 on Saturday night due to its flooded pond.

As the water recedes, the department plans to “reassess” park access and keep it open “in modified ways, as safety allows,” the announcement stated. But the park could be closed down again.

“The temporary closure to vehicle traffic is probably something we’ll experience off and on because of the snowpack levels and planned flood control measures,” said Liz Sollis, a spokesperson with the department, via email.

The department is working with Salt Lake City Public Utilities and Salt Lake County Flood Control to redirect water around the valley to detention basins such as Sugar House Park.

“Detention basins are part of long-standing plans to mitigate and lessen the impacts of spring runoff,” a Saturday news release stated.

The water flowing across the road in the park was due to the Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities’ controlled releases of water from Mountain Dell Reservoir, to make room for runoff from Parleys Creek, said Parks and Recreation.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory Sunday morning for Emigration Creek, saying that warm temperatures Sunday and Monday and rain or snow on Tuesday will melt snowpack and cause rivers to rise. “Flood stage” of Emigration Creek is possible Monday night into Tuesday morning, and Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, the advisory states.
