Major snowstorm buries Utah. When will it end?

A major storm continues to dump snow on Utah on Tuesday, but there is an end in sight.

The storm, which left a foot or more of snow on the ground overnight in many areas, caused hundreds of traffic accidents, delayed or canceled dozens of flights in and out of Salt Lake International Airport, and forced most schools in northern Utah to cancel, delay or take classes online.

And, according to the National Weather Service, it will continue to snow throughout the day. A winter storm warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday, with additional accumulations of 4-9 inches in the Salt Lake Valley, and 2-5 inches in Weber, Davis, Utah, eastern Box Elder and Cache counties. In some areas, those totals could be even higher.

The Utah Department of Transportation is advising drivers to stay off the roads “until conditions improve.”

The snow is expected to taper off by 5 p.m. Less than inch is expected between 5-8 p.m., and little or no accumulation is forecast overnight or on Thursday or Friday.

This isn’t the end of winter weather, however. There’s a chance of snow on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

The National Weather Service reported impressive snow totals as of early Wednesday morning:

• Brighton — 25 inches.

• Park City Mountain Resort — 25 inches.

• Solitude — 24 inches.
