Boulder, Colo. – Before Saturday is out, Kyle Whittingham may owe a few of his fellow-Pac-12 head coaches a Christmas card.
The University of Utah’s chances of returning to the Pac-12 championship game remained alive Friday night after UCLA defeated Cal in Berkeley, 35-28. The Utes now need to defeat Colorado on Saturday afternoon, plus have Oregon State beat Oregon in the 126th meeting between them, and Washington beat Washington State in the 114th edition of the Apple Cup in Pullman.
One interesting factor here is that Utah-Colorado and Oregon-Oregon State will be taking place simultaneously, with the latter kicking off a half hour earlier at Reser Stadium in Corvallis. The Apple Cup is an 8:30 p.m. kickoff.
How to watch
Kickoff: 2 p.m. MT
TV: Pac-12 Networks | (Ted Robinson, Yogi Roth)
Radio in Salt Lake City: ESPN 700 | (Bill Riley, Scott Mitchell, Stevenson Sylvester)
Pregame storylines
The week began with Kyle Whittingham addressing Cam Rising’s injured left knee, while not making excuses for last week’s 20-17 loss at Oregon went down. Rising through three interceptions at Autzen Stadium for the first time in his career.
With UCLA beating Cal on Friday, our story from Tuesday breaking down Utah’s bowl possibilities is still valid. This includes what could happen if USC goes to the College Football Playoff, and the non-Rose Bowl options available to the Utes.
Given the expectations and who returned from last season, is a 9-win season good enough for this Utah team?
This week’s TribUte newsletter stayed with the notion of whether or not a nine-win season is good enough as I asked a question. How will history remember these Utes?
Citing a toe injury suffered at Oregon, Tavion Thomas announced Friday afternoon that he will shut down his final college season, and instead rehab and get read for the East-West Shrine Bowl and the NFL Draft.
