2 sisters who found $20K in hidden Utah treasure plan to ‘pay it forward’

Two Utah sisters on Sunday found a hidden chest full of cold, hard cash — the pot of gold at the end of a long treasure hunt. But instead of keeping the $20,000 prize, they plan to give the money to charity foundations that are meaningful to them.

Korri and Sashley Wolfe, who both served in the U.S. Air Force in Afghanistan, finished “The QR Hunt” on Sunday, beating more than 25,000 fellow treasure hunters. As part of the hunt, which began Aug. 12, participants had to scan QR codes at clue locations in order to mark their progress.

The sisters worked together for about a month to solve a complicated series of clues that eventually led them to the wooden chest, hidden in a gully off the Grove Creek Trail, near Pleasant Grove in Utah County.

They’re the first all-female team to win a hunt put together by John Maxim and Dave Cline, according to an Instagram video shot by Maxim just after they found the chest.

Both Native American, the Wolfe sisters said they plan to “pay it forward” and give the money to organizations whose work supports Indigenous people, mental health, reproductive rights and the LGBTQ community.

The hunt took them to Ogden, American Fork and Magna, to an escape room at Trolley Square, and into the video game world of “Flappy Bird,” which Korri Wolfe said was the hardest part of the hunt.

But the best part of the experience was teaming up with her sister during a difficult period in their lives, she said. The two had fallen into a “slump” after their best friend died last year, and both were dealing with depression.

Korri Wolfe said the scavenger hunt gave them a reason to get outside into the sunshine and fresh air as they worked toward finding the prize together.

“It was really cool to open that chest and see all the money, but it was a lot cooler to be able to do it with my sister,” she said.

Maxim and Cline started Utah Treasure Hunts during COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 to “entertain themselves and to motivate people to get out and enjoy the state’s outdoor bounty,” according to their website.

The treasure hunt completed by the Wolfe sisters was the fifth hunt that Maxim and Cline have put together. Maxim said he and Cline are currently planning a spring hunt that will center around a poem, which participants will have to use to help locate a treasure.
