Wranglers on horseback — along with Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and first lady Abby Cox — led a herd of longhorn cattle through downtown Salt Lake City on Tuesday, providing a sneak preview of the annual Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo.

Police cordoned off wheeled traffic Tuesday morning as the cows, the cowhands and the Coxes moseyed down South Temple, past The Lion House — the family home of Brigham Young — and the Church Office Building. The cattle drive then moved a block north to North Temple, on its way west to the Utah State Fairpark, where the rodeo takes place Wednesday through Monday (except Sunday).

The eight Texas longhorns will be on display in the rodeo’s Frontier Fun Zone, which also includes re-creations of a Native American village, a pioneer camp, a mountain man trading camp, pony rides, a carnival, an autograph booth for rodeo contestants, and live music.

The Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo starts Wednesday, with opening ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m. — with bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, and women’s breakaway roping in between.

Semifinal rounds will be held Wednesday through Saturday, with the grand final round on Monday, Jan. 25. Performances start each night at 7:30 p.m.

All events take place at the Days of ’47 Arena at the Utah State Fairpark, 1000 W. 300 North, Salt Lake City. Tickets are available at utahdaysof47rodeo.com.
