Letter: I too want to vote for a progressive. But, for now, please join me in voting for Evan McMullin.

Evan McMullin haters: I hear you. I see you. Yes, this is hard to swallow. I know I was disappointed when the Democratic caucus decided not to support a candidate coming out of convention. It is in these moments that I remember who our senator is right now. My inner voice is screaming: I want to vote for a progressive candidate! Then in a moment of clarity I realize that the person who supposedly represents me right now makes decisions based on his biggest donor’s preference and hasn’t had a town hall in my area for years.

I have optimism. I’ve looked around and can see folks younger and smarter than me will be calling the shots here in Utah in the next 20 years. At that point we’ll have a purple state; a state where we can field a Democratic candidate who has a reasonable chance of winning.

That time is not here yet.

In the meantime, will you vote for someone who has pledged not to vote for Mitch McConnell as Senate majority leader? Will you vote for someone who has not tried to overturn the 2020 election? Will you join me in voting for Evan McMullin?

Matt Gardner, Millcreek
