Jazz assistant coach Sergi Oliva leaving for new job in Portland

After spending two years under head coach Quin Snyder, Jazz assistant coach Sergi Oliva is leaving the organization to become an assistant general manager for the Portland Trail Blazers, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Oliva will join former Jazz executive Andrae Patterson and former ESPN draft guru Mike Schmitz as assistant GMs to newly selected general manager Joe Cronin, as the Blazers revamp their front office after the firing of Neil Olshey last year. The group reports to Portland owner Jody Allen, brother of deceased former Microsoft executive Paul Allen.

The 38-year-old Oliva spent six years with the Philadelphia 76ers as the team’s vice president and director of analytics and strategy before joining the Jazz in 2020. With the Jazz, Oliva provided analytical support to the coaching staff, among other duties.

From Gelida, Catalonia, Oliva started his career as a youth coach in Spain.
