Letter: 9th and 9th neighborhood has been degraded — but not by a whale

Some people love the new whale sculpture in the roundabout at 9th South and 11th East. Others hate it. As a colorful, engaging work of public art, I think it’s fine. But here’s what I’ll lament every time I see the whale.

The Legislature cracked one of Salt Lake City’s most vibrant, cohesive neighborhoods in two by drawing a line right up the middle of 9th South. The north half of the whale is in congressional district 1. The south half is in district 2.

Thank goodness no living whales were harmed. But by carving it in two, our overlords have killed the voice of the 9th and 9th neighborhood, as indeed they have gutted all of Salt Lake County.
