Tony Finau went into the 86th Masters hoping that a lot more than just one of his shots would be shown during the CBS telecast of Sunday’s final round.
That single stroke was spectacular, though. The West High School graduate’s curling, 59-foot eagle putt on No. 13 gave him another pair of crystal goblets for his trophy case in Lehi and a memorable moment during an otherwise disappointing week at Augusta National Golf Club.

And it’s a good thing CBS didn’t show his partially shanked second shot on No. 11, leading to a double bogey. That was the lowlight of an adventurous round of 74 that included five bogeys and three birdies.
Finau (71-75-74-74) finished at 6 over par, tied for 35th place. His worst showing in five Masters appearances remains a tie for 38th in 2020; his best performance of the PGA Tour’s 2021-22 season is still a tie for 29th in the recent Valero Texas Open.
He’s projected to move up slightly to No. 139 in the FedEx Cup standings, not quite the big jump he was hoping the first major tournament of the season would give him.
Erratic driving and some bad luck with a couple of approach shots cost Finau those five bogeys Sunday. Yet for all of his putting issues this season, he made a few great strokes. Finau knocked in a 9-foot birdie putt on the par-3 No. 9, then lagged a 78-footer to within tap-in range for another birdie on the par-5 No. 8 before draining the 59-footer on No. 13. He two-putted for another birdie from the back fringe on the par-5 No. 15, after shaping a 229-yard second shot around the trees on the left side of the fairway.
Finau missed birdie chances from 14 feet on No. 16 and 8 feet on No. 18, while bogeying No. 17 after driving into the trees on the right.
Finau is skipping this week’s RBC Heritage in South Carolina. The next major tournament is the PGA Championship, May 19-22 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla.
