2 arrested in connection with double homicide at Draper Airbnb party

Police have arrested two men in connection with a fatal shooting Sunday in Draper, which unfolded during a party at an Airbnb and left two people dead.

Draper police chief John Eining announced at a news conference Thursday evening that two 18-year-olds had been arrested by U.S. Marshals and Draper detectives that afternoon — one at a home in Lehi, and the other at a home in Herriman.

One of the men will be booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, and the other will be booked into a juvenile detention facility, Eining said, because he was 17 years old when the shooting happened.

Police released the name of the man who was 18 at the time of the shooting, but The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not name suspects until they have been formally charged with a crime.

Eining said police will recommend that aggravated murder charges be filed against the suspects as the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office works to make a charging decision.

Detectives obtained information about the suspects through hours of interviews with witnesses of the shooting, which happened at the vacation rental near 11400 S. Cranberry Hill Court (near 300 East) early Sunday.

Two men were shot: One died at the scene, and the other was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died, police said Monday. The two killed were identified as Austin Terry Powell, 27, and Jonathan July Fuentes, 21.

Eining said one attendee of the party became upset when the gathering was getting broken up, and started throwing beer bottles into the street. More people then began arguing and throwing beer bottles at one another, and then a man pulled out a gun and fired several shots, striking the two men, police said.

It’s unclear if the suspects had any sort of relationship with the victims. Eining declined to clarify, but said authorities aren’t looking for any other suspects and that there’s no danger to the public.

A GoFundMe campaign posted online states that Powell “loved his family and was such a loyal friend who would sacrifice his time and talent to help anyone in need.”

“He was a caring father to his 9-year-old daughter and an amazing son,” the page continues. It had raised more than $4,500 as of Thursday evening.

According to a statement from Airbnb, the company bans parties at its vacation rentals, and the property’s owner “was not aware of the party and did not consent to it.”

The company removed the guest who booked the Airbnb from its platform as it worked to conduct a thorough investigation. According to the statement, Airbnb reached out to Draper police “to offer our assistance.”
