Real Salt Lake captain Albert Rusnák has announced that he is leaving the club after five seasons.
“My time at Real Salt Lake is done and while it is now time to say goodbye, please know that I will cherish our memories, how we overcame obstacles, in the face of immeasurable odds,” the Slovakian attacker and midfielder wrote in a message on Instagram. “Thank you for your passion, support and the love you expressed to me, my family and the team.”
In recent days, Rusnák’s name has been attached to rumors involving numerous clubs both inside and outside of Major League Soccer. No landing spot for the 27-year-old, however, has been officially announced.
Rusnák had appeared in 140 games – scoring 41 goals and notching 39 assists —since joining RSL in 2017.
Heading into this offseason, both Rusnák and RSL officials had been hopeful they could reach a deal to keep Rusnák with the club.
“That’s the thing I want,” Rusnák said in an interview in November.
“Obviously, the uncertainty surrounding our ownership situation makes it more difficult,” RSL general manager Elliot Fall said at the time. “But I’m optimistic he’ll be here for the long term.”
Added Rusnák: “Until you put the pen to the paper, you never know.”
