I have been reading with interest the discussions of changing the filibuster rules to allow for the passage of the Freedom to Vote Act. Sens. Mike Lee and Mitt Romney were both recently quoted as being opposed to changing the rules for the filibuster, but my question is, why aren’t they and other Republican leaders supporting the Freedom to Vote Act, avoiding the necessity of even discussing the filibuster?
It is hard to understand opposition to national rules applying to all states that have been successfully used here in Utah and in many other states for years. Some areas addressed by the act standardize ID requirements, allow early voting, allow voting by mail, provide access for those with disabilities, regulate dark money, prevent election interference from foreign interests, and protect election officials from partisan reprisals. This is not a partisan issue; this is an issue affecting all citizens. Please contact your elected representative and let them know you support the Freedom to Vote Act.
