Expect warmer temperatures in Utah — still cold, but not frigid

After frigid temperatures on Monday morning in Utah, there will be a bit of a warming trend — and a short stint of unhealthy air along the Wasatch Front.

Utahns woke up Monday to temperatures in the teens, single digits and even lower across much of the state. Temperatures were below zero in areas ranging from Logan to Manti to Bryce Canyon, and it was in the 20s in St. George.

After below average temperatures over the New Year’s weekend, thermometers are expected to rise to slightly above normal by the end of the week in northern Utah. The forecast calls for temperatures in the 30s in Salt Lake City on Monday, reaching the 20s in Logan and the 40s in St. George.

Along the Wasatch Front, an inversion is building, but it’s not expected to last long because of a series of storms that will pass through Utah this week.

The Utah Department of Environmental Quality is forecasting orange/unhealthy for sensitive groups conditions in Salt Lake, Davis and Utah counties on Monday, improving to yellow/moderate in those three counties on Tuesday. It’ll be yellow/moderate in Cache, Tooele and Weber/Box Elder counties on Monday, improving to green/good in those three counties on Tuesday. It’ll be green across the state on Wednesday.

There’s snow — or a mix of rain and snow — in the forecast for Salt Lake City every day from Tuesday through Saturday, although not much snow accumulation is expected. Maybe 1-2 inches in some areas on Tuesday, with 3-7 inches possible in the mountains.

The city could see another couple of inches of snow on Wednesday, and scattered rain and snow showers on Thursday, with little or no accumulation. And there’s a slight chance of more rain and snow on Friday and Saturday.

High temperatures in the mid-30s are expected Monday through Wednesday, rising into the low 40s on Thursday and Friday. The normal high for this time of year is 38.

There’s no precipitation in the forecast for St. George through the upcoming weekend. Expect mostly sunny skies with temperatures in the upper 40s on Monday and Tuesday, rising to the mid-50s Wednesday-Sunday. Normal highs in St. George at this time of year are in the low 50s.
