More snowstorms are coming — and it’s going to get really cold on New Year’s Eve

The storm that brought snow squalls, caused dozens of accidents and turned much of Utah white on Monday has moved out of the state, but there are several more headed in to take its place. Not a lot more valley snow is expected in the next few days, according to the National Weather Service, but it’s expected to be very cold as 2021 gives way to 2022.

Temperatures in the teens and low 20s left roads frozen on Tuesday morning, and it was expected to remain below freezing all day — the forecast high temperature in Salt Lake City is just 26. And the overnight low on Tuesday will drop to about 15.

Monday’s storm dropped 4.5 inches of snow on the Sandy benches, 3.5 inches in East Millcreek, 3.4 inches in Sugar House, 3 inches at the Salt Lake International Airport and in West Jordan, and 2.5 inches in West Valley City. There was considerably more accumulation at Utah’s ski resorts, including 13 inches at Brighton, 10 inches at Alta, 9 inches at Snowbird, 8.5 inches at Solitude, and 6 inches at Park City.

The Utah Avalanche Center has issued a backcountry avalanche warning through 6 a.m. on Sunday. Avalanche danger is high in the mountains near Salt Lake City, Logan, Ogden and Provo and in the Uintas and Skyline area mountains.

There’s a chance of snow Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Salt Lake City, but the storms aren’t expected to drop more than a couple of inches of snow in the valleys. The mountains could see a foot or more.

The best chance for more accumulation in the valleys — 1-3 inches in Salt Lake City — is Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The benches could see 2-5 inches.

Expect daytime highs in the low to mid-30s Wednesday through Friday, with overnight lows in the mid-20s — and then it’ll get really cold on New Year’s Eve. The forecast low on Friday night in Salt Lake City is just 10, and it will only get up to about 21 on New Year’s Day. Saturday night will be even colder — the forecast low is 9 — and Sunday’s forecast high is 30.

And the frigid temperatures are going to reach all the way to southern Utah. Rain, sometimes mixed with snow, is likely in St. George every day through Friday, with daytime highs in the low to mid-40s and overnight lows in the low to mid-30s. And it will also get really cold there on New Year’s Eve, with a low of 19.

New Year’s Day will be sunny and cold, with a high of 34, according to the National Weather Service.
