Letter: Utah’s own maverick

While in Pennsylvania campaigning recently, President Donald Trump made a derogatory remark about Sen. Mitt Romney. For no apparent reason, Trump said our good senator couldn’t be elected dogcatcher.

Those are offensive words unnecessarily said. But the words exemplify Trump’s character. For some strange reason, many Utahns seem to ignore his poor behavior. Worse yet, when some folks learn to ignore his poor behavior, they lose interest in all the daily lies he tells. Worst of all, some that support him now have no qualms of repeating his lies.

His latest lie is that he never disparaged veterans. Remember Trump’s ugly comments about the late Sen. John McCain? McCain had many great qualities. But according to Trump, “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.” We learned late this week Trump sees all of our fallen soldiers as “losers” and “suckers.” This from the guy that got five deferments from serving in the military.

When Romney returned to Utah to represent us, I knew we would be represented by a man of character. Like McCain, he is a bit of a maverick, and that is a good thing. I’ll take Romney for whatever office he wants... dogcatcher, senator or president.
