Grantsville teenager charged with killing his mother and siblings

A 16-year-old from Grantsville was charged Wednesday with 10 felony counts in the shooting deaths of his mother and three siblings and for allegedly also trying to kill his father.

Charging documents allege Colin Jeffery Haynie first killed his mother, Alejandra Consuelo, and youngest sibling, Milan, 12, on Jan. 17 after the pair came home from school. This was around 1 p.m.

Prosecutors say Colin Haynie killed his remaining siblings as they returned home.

Alexis, 17, was killed next. Then Matthew, 14, around 5:15 p.m.

All were shot in the head, chest or shoulder with a handgun, according to charging documents.

When Colin Haynie’s father, also named Colin, came home about an hour later, the teen allegedly shot him in the leg.

The father and son started fighting, and Colin Haynie allegedly hit his father in the head, causing a cut. Colin Haynie’s father told police that he told his son “that the defendant’s mother would be sad if the defendant killed him.”

That’s when Colin Haynie allegedly told his father that the rest of the family were already dead. His father said that Colin Haynie said he wanted to “kill everyone in the house except himself," charging documents state.

Colin Haynie’s father eventually got the gun away from the teen.

According to charging documents, a third person took the father and son to the hospital and called police while en route.

Colin Haynie was charged with four counts of aggravated murder, a count of attempted aggravated murder and five counts of discharging a firearm. All counts are first-degree felonies.

Court documents do not indicate a motive in the killings, which are among the state’s worst mass shootings and Grantsville’s first homicide in at least 20 years. It appears to be the largest mass shooting in Utah since 2007, when a gunman killed five people and himself at Trolley Square mall in Salt Lake City.

Colin Haynie is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 27.
