The University of Utah women’s basketball team improved to 11-0 on the season with a 73-48 victory over Hawaii on Friday in the Rebel Division championship of the Duel In The Desert Tournament in Las Vegas.
Ute senior Megan Huff, who recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, was named Rebel Division tournament MVP. Daneesha Provo, who earned all-tournament team honors, led Utah with 20 points.
It’s the second time under coach Lynne Roberts that the Utes have finished non-conference play undefeated, also going 11-0 in 2016-17.
Utah held a slim four-point lead at halftime, but erupted for 32 points in the third period to assume control.
The Utes shot 47 percent from the floor overall and outrebounded the Rainbow Wahine 40-27.
"We were finally defending in the second half and our defense was really good in that third quarter,” Roberts said. "It allowed us to get out and run and get those high percentage shots in the paint. We talked about at halftime that we weren’t winning the paint, in rebounding and in scoring. So we just had to win the paint, meaning defend better inside. I thought in that third and fourth quarter we were a lot tougher.”
Dre’Una Edwards chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and three blocks for the Utes while Erika Bean had a season-high 11 assists.
• BYU 70, Northern Colorado 50 — Five BYU players scored in double figures for the first time this season as the Cougars defeated Northern Colorado 70-50 Friday afternoon at the Marriott Center.
“I thought that tonight we defended very well,” BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. “I’ve got to give Brenna Chase a lot of credit, she guarded their best player and she got her points, but she earned them. I thought our bigs did a really good job both offensively and defensively. It was just a great team effort and I think our depth was a big difference tonight as I could sub and not lose a beat.”
Chase, Shaylee Gonzales, Paisley Johnson, Babalu Ugwu and Jasmine Moody led the Cougars (8-3) by all scoring in double figures. Chase and Gonzales scored 15 and 14 points, each making three 3-pointers. Johnson followed with 12 and Ugwu and Moody both had 10.
Johnson and Gonzales both had career highs in steals with five and four, respectively, and Ugwu totaled a career-high six rebounds, five of which were in the first half.
