Why two random guys in New Jersey bet $2,000 on Utah State football to win the national championship

The Utah State football team is looking to replicate the magic it took for an 11-3 season and a win in the L.A. Bowl in 2021. Some national pundits don’t think the Aggies can do it, with one ESPN analysis recently putting them in a tier named “Trending down in the Group of 5″ among every college FBS program in the country.

But guess who does believe in the Aggies? Two guys who were chilling in a Russian bathhouse in New Jersey when they decided to bet $1,000 for USU to win the national championship. The Aggies are at 1,000-to-1 odds to do that.

Robert Doran and Pete Kizenko, per an ESPN article, are gambling buddies who were trying to figure out where to put their money. Initially, Doran suggested to bet on the Aggies to win more than seven games in 2022 based on buzz he had heard about the team at a wedding he attended.

Kizenko went many, many steps further.

“F— it! Let’s hammer the national championship,” he said, per ESPN. “They’re 1,000-1.”

It should be noted that Doran admitted in the article that was “ripping tequila shots” with some former Michigan players at that wedding, and that’s largely where the idea to bet on Utah State came from. He maintained that he hadn’t done any real research into the team.

Kizenko played his initial bet on April 17, per ESPN. A day later, after noticing Caesars Sportsbook didn’t change the odds, he put down another $1,000.

ESPN reported that as of mid-July, there were more $1,000 bets for the Aggies to win the national title than any other team except Alabama and Ohio State.

It goes without saying that, on paper, it’s highly unlikely that the Aggies beat Alabama, let alone with the national championship. But that hasn’t deterred Doran and Kizenko, who told ESPN they will be at the USU-Alabama game sitting “first row behind the Aggies’ bench.”
