Letter: Impeachment may be divisive — but sometimes it’s necessary

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reportedly says that Trump is not worth the effort to impeach.

She clarifies that “Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country.”

I agree that impeachment requires something overwhelming and compelling, a high crime or misdemeanor. I disagree that it requires bipartisan support. The Constitution says nothing about bipartisan, nor public popularity, nor divisiveness.

If a federal officer fraudulently gained his office, or has used his office for personal gain, he needs to be impeached. Impeachment is a sad but vital part of a congressman’s job, a constitutional duty which transcends partisan politics.

It’s not about what the office holder is worth. It’s about what our republic is worth.
