Kurt Weiland — a veteran, business owner and proud Democrat — wants to replace the Republican incumbent in Utah’s 1st Congressional District.
So does Lee Castillo, a social worker who assists mentally ill Utahns and proudly points to his past experience working in farm fields and going through public schools.
The two Democrats — Weiland from Bountiful and Castillo from Layton — debated Tuesday in Provo to press their arguments about who would be the best nominee to face Rep. Rob Bishop in November.
Weiland says Utahns deserve a representative who will face constituents in a town hall setting every month, fight for sensible laws to curb gun violence (such as banning large capacity magazines and bump stocks) and work to create a guest-worker program.
Castillo promises to push for wage equity, the end to tax giveaways to big corporations and universal health care.
