Letter: Parleys Canyon gravel pit would infringe on personal property rights

Grandeur Peak majestically towers over the site of a proposed Gravel Pit in Parleys Canyon. Granite Construction and Jesse Lassley, Tree Farm, LLC, have pursued a new mining application over the objections of surrounding communities and citizens. This proposal would destroy seven generations of family historical sites extending all the way back to early Utah settlers and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints apostles, Parley P. Pratt and Willard Richards.

Granite Construction states, “core values are the basis for our decision-making.” Will mining Parleys Canyon be Granite Construction and Jesse Lassley, Tree Farm, LLC’s legacy?

There is overwhelming opposition to this new gravel pit. Mining the land will take away seven generations of personal property rights through an outdated mining process that the community opposes. Utah residents deserve better than this.

Leslie Petersen, Sandy
