Jacob City Fire scorches Soldier Canyon as smoke chokes Salt Lake Valley

The Jacob City Fire ignited Saturday east of Stockton, and smoke from the blaze drifted across the Salt Lake Valley later in the day as firefighters worked toward containment.

The wildfire is estimated at about 100 acres and is scorching both sides of Soldier Canyon in Tooele County, fire officials said Saturday afternoon. Officials advised residents near the canyon to avoid the area.

Smoke and ash rising over the Oquirrhs could be seen across the Salt Lake Valley on Saturday while crews battled the flames in erratic wind conditions. High winds across the Wasatch Front also brought smoke from Millard County, where two wildfires that ignited Friday have burned a combined 8,456 acres.
