In an Instagram live session on Sunday, Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert said that he had spoken with teammate Donovan Mitchell in recent days, and shot down a media report that “their relationship is unsalvageable.”
An anonymous source quoted in The Athletic over the weekend suggested that Gobert’s seemingly cavalier attitude about COVID-19, and the duo’s subsequent positive tests had potentially put them permanently at odds.
Gobert took issue with that characterization.
“It’s true that we didn’t speak for awhile. But we spoke a couple days ago. We’re ready to win a championship,” Gobert said. “… Relationships are never perfect. But at the end of the day, we both want to win. We’re grown men, and we want to win.”
Pressed by comedian Michael Blackson to detail his relationship with Mitchell, the All-Star center said he believed they would be able to put it behind them.
“We spoke, and we’re professionals. It’s all about going out there and trying to win for the team. We did speak. … People like to believe everything they read.”
Gobert added that the closeness of this group of players was special.
“This year, we have a group of guys that is very close. We always say, ‘It’s bigger than basketball.’ And it is bigger than basketball. We’ve got guys that care about one another, and when you have that mindset when you go out on the court, you’re just better as a team.”
