Comeback falls short in final seconds for Utah State men’s basketball

Logan • The Utah State Aggies men’s basketball team had all the momentum heading into Wednesday’s matchup with the No. 25 San Diego State Aztecs.

They had been winners of three straight games. They got two votes in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll. The university and fans were rallying behind Ukrainian guard Max Shulga, who fell victim to Colorado State fans chanting “Russia” at him just a few days prior.

But the Aggies couldn’t withstand the hot first-half shooting from the Aztecs, poor overall defense, or the lack of overall rhythm of a game mired by a combined 36 fouls and seven technical fouls. They couldn’t finish off a comeback that took them to within just one point with 10 seconds left and the ball.

The Aggies lost 63-31 to the Aztecs. dropping them to 8-4 in the Mountain West Conference. A win would’ve put USU in a three-way tie for first place in the conference.
