Letter: C02 emissions, rain and safety: Three questions about Utah’s cloud seeding plans

I have many questions before Utah proceeds with a five fold increase in the taxpayer funded silver iodide cloud seeding boondoggle (“Utah looks to expand cloud seeding to help with drought …”). But in the interest of time and space, I’ll limit it to three.

1) If we can connect the dots between CO2 emissions and global warming that’s brought us to this mega-drought, is there any concern about the additional CO2 emissions from the propane fueled flame that burns for up to 48 hours to disperse the silver iodide?

2) Since there’s only so much water we can “squeeze” out of the clouds, how is it that cloud seeding is a significant benefit for the Utah mountains while at the same time being insignificant in the amount of precipitation it takes from other areas? Either it’s significant or it isn’t.

3) What studies have demonstrated that silver iodide is “environmentally safe”? I’ve been around long enough to have witnessed many chemicals that were sold as “safe” until they weren’t.
