A 16-year-old Layton High student was apprehended by police Tuesday after he allegedly stabbed another student at a park across the street from the school, police said.
According to Layton police Lt. Travis Lyman, two groups of students initially left the high school at about 12:30 p.m. “with the intention of fighting” at Layton Commons Park, which is located across the street from the Layton High campus.
At least two of the students then fought at the park, and one stabbed the other once in the abdomen, Lyman said.
The 15-year-old victim was taken to an area hospital. His condition was not immediately known, but Lyman reported that the child was stable.
After the stabbing, the 16-year-old suspect headed to a Layton apartment complex where he lives. At about 1:40 p.m., police took him into custody there. Neither of the students were identified by police.
Three schools — Layton High, Central Davis Junior High and Crestview Elementary — were all placed on “lockout” Tuesday because of the stabbing, in which any staff and students outside are brought inside and perimeter doors are secured, but school otherwise resumes as normal. Police said the lockouts were later lifted.
