A 38-year-old West Jordan man pleaded guilty to automobile homicide this week, three months after police said he drunkenly ran over his wife and killed her in a Salt Lake City International Airport parking garage.
Shawn Sturgeon and his wife had just returned from a trip when they and their “small child” were in the airport’s short-term parking garage at about 2:30 p.m. on April 4, court documents state.
Witnesses said the couple was arguing through the terminal, and video surveillance from the garage showed Sturgeon reversing the car, then driving over his wife.
Sturgeon next exited the vehicle, “flailing his arms” and reportedly told his wife to get into the truck, police said. He then drove them to the garage’s tollbooth exit, where he asked for help.
His wife taken to the hospital, where she died a short time later.
Police said Sturgeon had “glassy bloodshot eyes,” and smelled of alcohol. A preliminary toxicology screen revealed Sturgeon had a blood-alcohol level of 0.13 at the time, almost three times Utah’s legal limit.
On Monday, Sturgeon entered a guilty plea to a second-degree felony count of automobile homicide and a third-degree felony count of domestic violence in the presence of a child.
His sentencing is scheduled for September 9.
