Police shoot and kill knife-wielding man in Springville

Springville police shot and killed a man early Saturday after officers said he rammed his car into a police vehicle and threatened an officer with a knife.

Authorities responded to a tipster’s call about a man shooting a gun into the air outside the Springville Walmart, located at 660 S. 1750 West.

After police arrived at the scene, they said a man began following a patrol car in his own vehicle before crashing into the back of the police car. When the officer got out of his vehicle, police said the other man threatened the officer with a knife.

That officer fired at least one shot at the man, and police said the man died at the scene. Police didn’t specify how many times the officer shot at the man or how many times the man was hit.

As of Sunday afternoon, the man’s name hadn’t been released, pending notification of family members.

Later, officers were unable to find any evidence that a gun was actually being fired before they arrived, police said.

The incident will be investigated by the Utah County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Team.

Saturday’s shooting was the seventh police shooting in Utah so far this year. The last police shooting in Utah to date was in Orem on May 28, involving Orem police. The man shot survived, and was charged with attempted murder.
