The Orem City Police Department is asking residents to avoid the area of 1000 S. and Main St. on Saturday morning after an “incident” occurred.
Announcements were shared with residents via the department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Around 10:40 a.m. the department gave an update on the situation via their Facebook page, sharing that officers were dispatched to the area of 800 S. Orem Boulevard following a report of a vehicle accident, where no reports of injury have been shared, according to Lt. Nick Thomas with the department.
The statement shares that the suspect involved fled the scene on foot, toward the area of 1000 S. and 100 E. toward a home, and that “officers engaged the suspect with several shots.” Thomas confirmed the suspect did have a gun with him, but details are still under investigation. No officers were injured in the incident, though the SWAT team was called.
This marks the sixth police shooting in Utah this year, according to The Salt Lake Tribune’s reporting.
The suspect then ran into a home, “which he does not live at and barricaded himself inside.”
Once verbal contact was made with the suspect, negotiations began and the occupants of the home were evacuated without injury. The suspect eventually gave himself up after admitting he was injured.
“The suspect was transported to the hospital with injuries,” the statement says, but no details of the degree of his injuries or of his identity have been shared.
Thomas says there are still some roads blocked off in Orem, like 800 S. Orem Boulevard and 1000 S. 150 E. He said “since there are multiple crime scenes, I don’t know how long the protocol teams will be out there.”
He estimates those areas will be closed off for another two to three hours. Specific details are still under investigation.
This a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
