First day of spring brings wind and snow to Utah

The calendar says spring.

But you might have been muttering something else.

Utahns were greeted by gray skies, gusts of wind and snow on Sunday, the official first day of spring.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Wasatch Mountains — including the areas of Mantua, Logan Summit, Alta and Brighton — that will be in effect until 6 p.m. The weather service also expects 3-6 inches of snow to fall in those areas, and perhaps more in the upper Cottonwood canyons, by mid-afternoon.

Meanwhile, the weather service says 1-2 inches of snow is expected to fall in the Salt Lake Valley by the middle of the afternoon and an overnight low of 27 degrees.

A wind advisory is in effect until 3 p.m. for the West Desert, including Wendover and Dugway.

Drivers on Interstate 80 could experience wind gusts of up to 50 mph, said the weather service, which urged truck drivers and others in high-profile vehicles to use caution.

The Utah Avalanche Center said avalanche danger is “moderate” in the Salt Lake area, as well as in the Uintas, the Provo and Ogden areas, and in the southeast mountains.

Avalanche danger is “considerable” in northern and central Utah.

Sunday’s storm, however, should pass through quickly. In Salt Lake City, Monday should be mostly sunny with a high of 46. Temperatures in the Salt Lake Valley could hit 70 degrees by Friday.
