Shaylee Gonzales nets new career high, helps BYU women’s basketball pull away from Saint Mary’s

Sophomore guard Shaylee Gonzales proved why she is considered one of the best women’s college basketball players in the country.

The sophomore guard scored a new career high of 35 points Saturday as the No. 20 BYU women’s basketball team beat Saint Mary’s 84-69 on the road. She also added six assists and six steals.

“I think she’s the best player in our league,” Gaels associate head coach Allyson Fasnacht said of Gonzales on the WCC Network.

Four total BYU players scored in double figures in a game that was close until the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. Senior guard Paisley Harding had 18 points, sophomore forward Lauren Gustin had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and senior guard Tegan Graham added 11 points.

The Cougars forced the Gaels to commit 28 turnovers and scored 31 points off them. Otherwise, Saint Mary’s shot better from the field and the 3-point line compared to BYU.

BYU didn’t allow a point in the last five-plus minutes of the game. It ended the game on an 11-0 run.
