One dead after truck strikes ‘several elk’ on I-70

One person has died after a pickup truck struck a gang of elk near Emery, the Department of Public Safety said Saturday.

According to a news release from the DPS, troopers responded to the single vehicle crash on I-70 near milepost 92 at about 5:37 a.m. Saturday morning. The truck was carrying five people, and one person was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead when first responders arrived at the scene.

Passengers in critical condition were taken to area hospitals by medical helicopter, and others were taken by ambulance. The department did not release the names of any occupants or say how many of the four were in critical condition.

I-70 westbound was closed while helicopters were on scene, according to the release, but reopened shortly after.
