Holiday gift idea: ‘Take Flight’ with Utah Opera & The Voice’s John Holiday

Starring The Voice’s John Holiday, whose vocal talents The New Yorker called “an astonishing thing of beauty,” Flight is sure to leave viewers breathless.

(Psst: This show is the perfect gift idea for last-minute Christmas shoppers).

“It’s funny and touching in all the right ways,” Kristine McIntyre, director of the production, told The Salt Lake Tribune. “It’s an opera that deals with birth, death, and everything in between.”

Looking for Winter Activities in Salt Lake City, Utah? Look No Further Than the Capitol Theater.

If you’re looking for something fun to do in January in Salt Lake City, Utah, this show makes for a great evening outing.

Flight features an eclectic cast of characters who are stuck in an airport terminal together overnight. Among them are a couple on vacation, a diplomat and his pregnant wife, a mysterious older woman, and a refugee dodging an immigration officer.

Through unexpected discoveries and events, the characters overcome obstacles and forge unlikely connections.

“It’s very funny, there’s uproarious comedy, there’s very clever wordplay, situational comedy,” said McIntyre of the storyline. “And then kind of when you least expect it, there’s the emotional gut punch.”

But it’s not just the funny, touching storyline that has people talking about Flight. This opera is unlike anything that has been performed in Utah before—it’s “completely unique in the opera canon.”

“It’s a great example of what opera can do, which is take a really pedestrian situation–a bunch of people stuck at the airport together—and elevate it to something that feels like great art, through the power of the human voice,” said McIntyre.

Need a Christmas Gift Idea? Give the Gift of Humor and a Touching Story.

For anyone who still needs to do some last-minute Christmas shopping, Flight is the perfect gift for anyone who loves music and a good story.

If you aren’t sure about opera, rest assured that this isn’t the type of performance you might picture.

As a contemporary opera told in English, both the music and the themes bear very little resemblance to traditional opera.

“A lot of modern operas are probably more issue-oriented. So it’s wonderful to do one that has comedy as its basis, that uses comedy as the launching point to tell a story,” explained McIntyre.

“[But this] is a story that’s very easy for people to relate to. I mean, who hasn’t been in a situation of getting stuck someplace and being forced to talk to the people around you, make a connection with them, and then wish you hadn’t?”

“It still has some wonderful, big themes, and it’s a very moving and meaningful piece. It just goes about it in a slightly more offbeat, modern way.”

Tickets can be purchased through the Utah Opera website. Show times run January 15- 23, 2021 at the Capitol Theater.

“This is an extraordinary chance to see something that I think is a really important and fun contemporary opera,” said McIntyre. “John Holiday is a genius… People should not miss it, because they will not have ever heard anything like it.”
