With cheers and claps and a lot of confetti, Weber State University inaugurated its 13th president Tuesday.
Brad Mortensen took the helm of the northern Utah school in the formal ceremony this week — though he’s been leading Weber State for more than a year since he was selected by Utah Board of Regents in December 2018 to fill the post.
Mortensen was previously the vice president for university advancement at the Ogden university with 28,000 students.
He has been particularly involved in the community, too, as chairman of the Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce and of United Way of Northern Utah. And he’s worked to create more partnerships between local groups and the university, particularly to provide financial aid for those in need.
Mortensen previously worked for the Utah System of Higher Education, the Utah governor’s office and the Arizona Legislature. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Utah State University, a master’s degree from Syracuse University and a doctorate from the University of Utah.
He comes in at the tail end of a major shuffling of leadership at colleges across the state, with three other presidents also being named in 2018 at the University of Utah, Utah Valley University and Westminster College.
“I look forward to continuing my work with faculty, staff, trustees, alumni, community, and especially students,” he has previously said. “Our Weber State family remains dedicated to providing educational access and opportunity for all.”
